The film is a young boy who gets a red motorcycle from his mom on the day of his birthday. He then hears that his dad has been arrested from his uncle and then goes to jail. And while in jail, he meets a man who helped rescue him after the death of his mother on the day she died. So they become friends and help each other out with money to buy food for their families. They also start going on motorbike trips together during which they have fun while working on motorcycles in Joe's shop while watching an Indian cooking show on TV while drinking coffee at Joe's café nearby, so it is more of a family bonding time rather than just a cool motorbike action story. But the problems are that the young boy is not happy with his uncle, but is afraid of him. Also, both boys are threatened with eviction from their homes. The young boy then finishes his schooling and gets a job at Sea World, but he still feels that he needs to help Joe who helped his mother in life, but Joe won't allow him either to send money or to come back to New Zealand for work as he was scared if something bad happens to Joe's son because of Joe's past.The film was shot between Australia and New Zealand. Tamati Coffey and Matiu Lovegrove, the two lead actors, were responsible for suggesting who should play their respective roles.
The soundtrack of "Tamariki" was composed by Masahiko Sato. A promotional video featuring the song "Bummed Out" was released on YouTube on 11 October 2015, followed by an official music video on 4 November 2016. A trailer of the film was released on YouTube with the song "Xaman". A remixed version of the song "Uyirtham" played over the end credits of the movie.

The film was initially scheduled for a release in New Zealand on 12 November 2016, but was later postponed to 9 December 2016 due to controversy surrounding the death of Donald Trump, which occurred during the initial release date."Tamariki" received mixed reviews from critics. It currently holds an approval rating of 60% based on 11 reviews and an average rating of 5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.

The DVD and Blu-ray release contains a number of bonus features such as extensive deleted scenes, extended interviews with cast and crew, behind the scenes footage and more. The home media release also includes the promotional music video for "Bummed Out" which was available to view online while the film was in post-production. The home media release received a nomination (for Best Television Feature) at the 2016 New Zealand Screen Awards.
